Man convicted in fake prescriptions scheme as part of Las Vegas-based operation

A man who posed as a medical assistant was convicted of distributing large quantities of illegal prescriptions for opioids without a legitimate medical purpose in a federal court last week in Las Vegas, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.

David A. Litwin, 64, was found guilty Friday of conspiring with a licensed physician and others to sell fake prescriptions, including for oxycodone, hydrocodone, Xanax and Soma, without any legitimate medical purpose for hundreds of customers the release stated.

Litwin helped in the operation of New Amsterdam Medical Group based in Las Vegas, which purported to be a legitimate pain specialty center. Individuals would purchase the drugs to then be sold on the secondary market.

The case was investigated by the DEA and the FBI.

U.S. District Judge Kent J. Dawson presided over the trial. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 21.
