The Liberty football team is making the most of its preseason schedule against out-of-state opponents, coach Rich Muraco said.

The Patriots beat visiting Campbell of Hawaii 20-14 on Friday in the 9th Island Classic to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Liberty’s defense had to stop a Campbell scoring drive in the final minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Last week, the Patriots had to rally in the fourth quarter to beat St. Louis of Hawaii in the classic. And in the season opener, the Patriots put up a good fight on the road against defending national champion St. John Bosco of California.

“I told the kids after the game that all three games were everything we wanted,” Muraco said. “Against an elite team like Bosco we battled and didn’t back down. Last week, we were down by 10 points and came back to get the win. We are showing some heart.”

Colton Friedman had a pair of field goals to open the scoring against Campbell. Isaiah Lauofo added touchdown runs of 15 and 70 yards.
