The high school football playoffs begin tonight — yes, on a Thursday.
All games are being contested today as the state shutters Friday in observance of Nevada Day.
Having one less day to prepare isn’t ideal, some coaches say, but it’s part of the postseason challenge in the Silver State.
Many of the top teams — Bishop Gorman in the Class 5A-Division I, Legacy and Palo Verde in the Class 5A-Division III, and SLAM Nevada and Moapa Valley in the Class 3A — have first-round byes tonight and won’t have to sweat the condensed week.
We’ll see them next week and likely the next three weeks until state champions are crowned.
The game of the night, without question, is a showdown between neighborhood rivals Shadow Ridge and host Arbor View in the Class 5A-Division I.
Arbor View has been decimated with injuries, and Shadow Ridge has exceeded expectations in its initial season competing in the state’s highest classification. The Mustangs beat Desert Pines, only lost to Liberty by three points, and earlier in the season, trailed Bishop Gorman by just four points at halftime.
