Prescribed burn set for next week near Boulder Beach

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is planning a prescribed burn near Boulder Beach and the Nevada Department of Wildlife Lake Mead Fish Hatchery next week, according to a National Park Service news release.

The purpose of the burn set to begin Tuesday is to reduce hazardous vegetation build-up around the department’s facilities and reduce invasive species to improve habitat and biodiversity along the wash between the hatchery and the lake.

“By removing dead and highly adapted invasive plants, like tamarisk, this prescribed burn will reduce the competition for native plants to thrive,” said Jeremie Gamiao, assistant fire management officer for Lake Mead.

Ignitions are expected to take one or two days and treat about 20 acres.

There are no closures planned for the burn, but the release warned people in the area may see active smoke and fire.

Smoke impacts are expected to be minimal and short-lived, the release stated.
