UNLV Lady Rebels head coach Lindy La Rocque watches from the sidelines during the Mountain West womens championship game against the Colorado State Rams at the Thomas & Mack Center Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

The UNLV women’s basketball team is on quite a roll, and the country is taking notice.

After weeks on the outside looking in, the ladies finally broke into the Associated Press Top 25 poll that was released on Monday, checking in at No. 23.

It’s the first time UNLV has been ranked since 1994, and it is well deserved. Lindy La Rocque’s crew beat Boise State on Saturday to improve to 24-2 and clinch at least a share of the Mountain West regular-season championship. UNLV has now won 15 consecutive games and is a perfect 14-0 in conference play.

The team is led by reigning MWC Player of the Year Desi-Rae Young, a junior center who is averaging 18.2 points and 10.3 rebounds, and senior point guard Essence Booker, who is posting 13.7 points and 3.7 assists. Sophomore guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas has made a team-high 38 3-pointers, including the long-range game-winner in the final seconds against Boise State.

Last year, UNLV claimed the regular-season championship and then won the Mountain West tournament, earning their way into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in two decades.

The ladies can clinch the 2022-23 regular-season title on Thursday with a win over San Jose State at the Thomas & Mack Center.
