Editor’s note: As he traditionally does around this time every year, Brian Greenspun is turning over his Where I Stand column to others. Today’s guest is Barry Odom, football coach at UNLV.

Las Vegas is a city that is no stranger to lights, action or excitement. From the iconic Strip to the vibrant Arts District, it’s a place that has always known how to put on a show. Now, as we gear up for the start of a new era in UNLV football, there’s no denying that the city is about to witness the performance that it craves from our team.

I’ve been fortunate to live in many places throughout my life, but there’s something inexplicably special about Las Vegas. Beyond the neon lights and busy casinos, at its heart, this city is a tight-knit community. It’s a place where dreams are chased daily, where stories of resilience and triumph are written in its foundation. My family and I are profoundly thankful to be a part of the story of Las Vegas, to call this magnetic city “home.”

The beginning of a new UNLV football season signifies hope, determination, grit and the unwavering spirit of our city. Just as Las Vegas has reinvented itself time and time again, our team stands on the foundation of a new beginning. The field awaits, the stadium calls and the cheers of our loyal fans will soon resonate through the desert air.

This journey is not one we will take alone. The strength of our team is mirrored by the support of our community. WE NEED YOU – every fan, every passionate supporter and every individual who believes in the magic of sport. Your belief, your energy and your spirit fuels our players, igniting a fire that will help push them to be their best, play after play.

There will be some ups and downs, that of course is part of life. But this is Las Vegas, a city that thrives on challenges, that rises from the dust and that transforms every obstacle into opportunity. We will win, not just because of the talent and dedication of our players but also because of the unyielding support of our community. Our victories on the field will be a testament to our collective spirit, a symbol of our unity and toughness.

I am deeply honored for the opportunity to be the head coach of UNLV football, to be a part of something larger than myself and represent a university and city that are ambitious and strive for continuous progress. Every practice session, every staff meeting, every moment leading up to that first kickoff is filled with gratitude.

And yet, with all that gratitude, there’s an undeniable thrill, an electric excitement that flows through my soul. The anticipation of what’s to come, the promise of unforgettable moments and the thought of victories earned together create a buzz that can be felt throughout the locker room and across campus. There’s no feeling like it – the blend of excitement and gratitude, the combination of hope and determination.

As we begin on this new chapter of UNLV football, I want to extend an invitation to each and every resident of this wonderful city. Join US! Be a part of this journey. Whether you’re in the stands or cheering us on from the living room while we are away from Allegiant Stadium, know that your support, your presence and your belief make all the difference.

Las Vegas — a city of dreams and dreamers, of winners and warriors — we are ready to make you proud. Here’s to a season filled with exhilarating plays, to nights under the stars celebrating our victories and to a community that stands together, unwavering and strong.

A heartfelt thank you, Las Vegas, for welcoming me, my family, our coaches and entire staff in such a warm and enthusiastic manner. Let’s all get together for a party on Saturday, Sept. 2 starting at 1 p.m. when we open our season against Bryant University. Season tickets to our six home games, all offering an incredible view from the lower level of our state-of-the-art stadium, start at just $150. In fact, watching your Rebels in person is not only affordable but also family-friendly as five of our six home games kick off no later than 4 p.m.

If you are one of the UNLV program’s returning fans, welcome back! But if you have not been to a game yet or it’s been awhile, I urge you to come out and see what this team has to offer. I think you’ll like what you see.

Let’s make the 2023 football season special…TOGETHER!

Go Rebels!
