Rain pours down over the Strip as seen from the Las Vegas Sun office Friday, Aug. 18, 2023. The southwest is expected to experience significant rainfall this weekend due to Hurricane Hilary, according to weather forecasters.

The City of Las Vegas and Henderson are handing out free sandbags as Las Vegas Valley braces for major to historic flooding predicted for this weekend.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue posted that the City of Las Vegas is providing sandbags outside of the following locations:

West Yard — 2950 N. Ronemus Drive

East Yard — 3128 E. Bonanza Drive

The City of Henderson also posted Friday that sandbags will be available to pick up Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon at Heritage Park Senior Facility and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center. Only the bags are provided to residents, who must get the sand separately.

“Total rainfalls could be 100 percent more of the yearly normal amount for Southern Nevada,” A page dedicated to Hurricane Hillary set up by the City of Henderson states. “The City of Henderson urges residents to take proper precautions, especially when driving, since flash flooding is anticipated. This is also a good opportunity to turn off irrigation systems to save water.”

The National Weather Service predicts rapid onset flash flooding of normally dry creeks, washes and low-lying areas Friday through Monday.
