A photo of a bird apparently carrying a small bag of unknown contents has been going viral on social media since it was posted Monday.
Justin Dean, of Texas, said he noticed the bird just off Fremont Street and took the picture over the weekend. While he’s uncertain what the bird was carrying, he joked in the caption of the post that the bag was cocaine.
“If you're missing a bag of Coke this little fella here has it by Pizza Rock,” he posted.
The bird appears to be a Grackle, which are common to the Las Vegas area, said Kelle Coble, a bird enthusiast with Southwest Exotic Avian Rescue.
“They are a very gregarious species,” Coble said. “You find them a lot in parking lots, they tend to hang out where there is a lot of dropped food.”
If the bird did consume the narcotics, it would likely die, she said.
Coble hasn’t heard of other similar cases in the region but wasn’t surprised because of the way some bird species live by scavenging.
“He thought he had a wonderful treasure,” she said about the bird in the photo. “Hopefully, he realized it wasn’t food and didn’t ingest it.”
