The Cimarron-Memorial football team picked the right time to win its first game of the season: Against Cheyenne in the Duel in the Desert, 38-12.

The schools each opened in 1991 in northwest Las Vegas and have annually played in the rivalry game.

“We definitely took a step forward in the right direction tonight,” Cimarron coach Shane Kanie said. “We are taking it week by week. We have some really good teams (on the schedule) in the near future.”

Kanie said Cimarron spread the ball around on offense with Michael Sabina passing for four touchdowns and 300 yards, including a scoring strike to Andrew Overland.

Defensively, Nacere Feltus had an interception return for a score.
