The Green Valley football team held its own for most of the night against visiting Sierra Canyon — a top-40 team from California — in a 35-17 defeat.

“First and foremost, Sierra Canyon is of high quality,” Green Valley coach Clay Mauro said. “We played really hard in the first half. Our kids fought and stuck with those guys.”

The Gators had touchdown runs of 93 yards from quarterback Jack Thow and 5 yards from running back Quamir Cordona. Steven Shamoun kicked a 35-yard field goal.

Green Valley only trailed 14-7 at halftime and “our kids were fired up,” Mauro said.

But the Gators gave up a few big plays in the second half as Sierra Canyon pulled away. Still, Mauro said, there was a noticeable jump in how Green Valley performed in comparison to the season opener last week.
