The Las Vegas Sun is again recognizing the best in high school sports. And we need your help identifying the top athletes and performances of the past year.

We are seeking nominations for the Sun Standout Awards, our annual sports awards show returning in May to the South Point Showroom after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic.

Modeled after ESPN’s ESPY Awards, the black-tie-optional event honors top games, moments, teams and players. Awards include Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year and Citizen of the Year.

The Hank Greenspun Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the founder of the Las Vegas Sun, is the top award of the program. It is reserved for those who have displayed general excellence and strength of character or someone who displays exceptional sportsmanship and perseverance while dealing with adversity.

“It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears, for these outstanding athletes to receive a Sun Standout Award,” said Ryan Growney, the South Point general manager. “I believe youth and high school sports create a great foundation for their future. And in the Entertainment and Sports Capital of the World, we are honored to host a night like this to recognize their hard work and success.”

The show debuted after the 2015-16 school year and has honored student-athletes from all corners of Southern Nevada.

Our goal is to honor the best of the best — regardless of sport. We’ve featured top wrestlers, tennis players, girls flag football players and others among the honorees.

That’s why we need your help detailing the accomplishments of the athletes in your school community.

“We love celebrating high school athletes at the Sun,” said Ray Brewer, the Sun’s managing editor and the show’s host. “This event is a chance to recognize the great student-athletes in our community. It’s my favorite night of the year, and for good reason. There’s nothing more important than giving the teenagers the spotlight they deserve.”

The show also has become popular with Las Vegas professional sports teams. The Aces, Golden Knights and Raiders have contributed to the evening in various ways. The Raiderettes dance team helped distribute awards; the Golden Knights have sent their mascot, “Chance,” to the show; and Aces players have participated in the occasion.

The show is at 7 p.m. May 24. The deadline to submit nominations is April 12.
