The Green Valley High football team didn’t win its season opener at Palos Verdes of California, but the Gators likely grabbed some momentum for the rest of the season with a spirited second half rally in a 38-24 defeat.

Green Valley trailed 23-6 at halftime in the first game of the season where just about everything that could go wrong did, coach Clay Mauro said.

“But we got the first-game jitters out (in the second half), and the kids responded,” Mauro said.

Quarterback Justyn Delzeit and Nate Richter connected for three touchdowns, and Josiah Edwards had a rushing score as Green Valley briefly took a 24-23 lead with four minutes remaining.

But Palos Verdes closed with 14 unanswered points as Green Valley tired down the stretch.

“Even though things did go our way, we fought back and fought back hard,” Mauro said.
