Coronado got a safety early and rolled to a 50-0 win over Clark at home on Friday night.

Keona Espinoza ran for over 100 yards, and fullback Derek Hurley scored two touchdowns for the Cougars (2-0), who start the year with two straight victories for the first time since 2012.

"If you're looking at the most improvement, the most improvement's always coming from Game 1 to Game 2," said Coronado coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. "You can obviously improve over the year, but between Game 6 and Game 8, your team's not going to go from a six to an eight. If you're looking for that big of a jump, it's from Week 1 to Week 2, and I think our guys answered the bell."

Coronado's strong defense has been the focal point of this strong start. Coming off a 26-8 win in the season opener against Clark last week, the Cougars started with a safety in the early going and later blocked a punt for a touchdown.

The Cougars will have a bye next week, which Biletnikoff says couldn't have come at a better time with several players feeling under the weather, as well as nine players who were academically ineligible to begin the year.

"We've got the meat of the season coming up, Green Valley and Silverado these next two games," Biletnikoff said. "It's important to be 2-0 going into those games."
