State OKs additional money for rehab of Strip pedestrian bridge

CARSON CITY — Since 2013, the cost of rehabilitating the elevators and escalators on the Tropicana pedestrian bridge over the Las Vegas Strip has ballooned from $1.3 million to $2.6 million.

The board of the state Department of Transportation today approved a $480,000 addition to the contract for Schindler Elevator Corp. and gave the company an extension to complete the project by Dec. 31, 2018. The previous completion date was May 2018.

The board also approved a $57.8 million project for road improvements at U.S. 95 and Interstate 15, near the Apex Industrial Park. Construction is slated to begin in mid-March and take nine months to complete.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, chairman of the board, said the project would support increased development at the industrial park.

The board also agreed to name State Route 140 north of Winnemucca after two federal firefighters who were killed last year when their vehicle overturned. Jacob O’Malley and Will Hawkins both worked for the Bureau of Land Management.
