Smoldering wastebasket sets off fire alarms at downtown hotel-casino

A smoldering wastebasket triggered fire alarms at Main Street Station this morning, but hotel security quickly got the situation under control and nobody was evacuated, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

The fire department received a report about 8:20 a.m. of smoke coming from a trash can in a fifth-floor room at the downtown hotel-casino at 200 N. Main St.

By the time firefighters arrived, hotel security had the situation under control and had moved the wastebasket into the hallway, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. Fire crews helped clear smoke from the hotel before leaving, he said.
