Two casino employees killed in attack, shooting at Silver Nugget identified

Two North Las Vegas casino employees killed in an attack and subsequent police shooting have been identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Officers were dispatched about 5:45 a.m. Thursday to the Silver Nugget, 2140 Las Vegas Blvd. North, North Las Vegas Police said.

Callers told a 911 operator that Edgardo Lavado Velasquez, 64, was being attacked and that the alleged attacker, Jeremias Cruz, 30, was acting erratically, police said.

Police found Velasquez's body in a back area of the building where the attack occurred. Velasquez, a North Las Vegas resident, died from trauma to the head and neck, the coroner's office said.

Officers encountered Cruz, who they said was having an "agitated chaotic episode" and was not complying. Police tried subduing him using a "less lethal weapon," but he aggressively approached the officers, trying to attack them, police said.

That's when an officer fired rounds at Cruz, police said. The Las Vegas resident died at University Medical Center from multiple gunshot wounds in the torso, the coroner's office said.

Another man who had been in an altercation with Cruz suffered injuries not deemed life-threatening, police said.
