Deadline extended to sign up for health insurance

The federal government is granting consumers an additional 48 hours to enroll in health insurance plans that would start Jan. 1.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced late Tuesday that it was experiencing “unprecedented demand and volume” of consumers contacting health exchange call centers. As a result, the department extended the deadline to sign up for Jan. 1 coverage until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and runs though Jan. 31. Consumers who enroll and pay for exchange health plans between Dec. 18 and Jan. 15 will not have coverage until Feb. 1. And anyone who signs up in the final two weeks of open enrollment will have to wait until March 1 for coverage to begin.

To begin the sign-up process, visit nevadahealthlink.com or call 1-855-768-5465 to find a licensed broker or get more information.
