MountainView Hospital is embarking on a $90 million expansion that will unfold over the next 18 months and significantly increase the hospital’s patient capacity, officials announced today.

The project will add 64 hospital beds and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, as well as expand the women’s services unit and emergency department.

An 80,000-square-foot medical office building also will be built on 8.2 acres next to the hospital.

“We continue to see a growing demand for health care services in the community and, in particular, the growing northwest part of the valley,” Chris Mowan, the hospital’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We have experienced an increase in patients choosing our emergency department for their emergency care needs, as well as an increase in patients choosing us for surgeries and deliveries. We expect that number to continue to grow as we differentiate ourselves through our clinical programs.”

The first phase of construction — adding a fourth and fifth floor with 32 private rooms per floor — will begin later this year, officials said.

After that is complete, the women’s services unit will be renovated to increase labor and delivery beds to 12 and post-partum beds to 32, in addition to the new NICU.

The emergency department also will be expanded to include a dedicated CT scanner, which will help decrease wait times for patients in need of imaging, and a larger helipad to accommodate two helicopters.

In September, construction will begin on the adjacent four-story medical office building, which will house office suites and a 225-seat auditorium for continuing education and community outreach programs.

The announcement comes two years after completion of a project that added a south tower and doubled the size of the emergency department.

“Since our 2013 expansion, MountainView has experiences an increasing demand from the community for our services and from physicians to practice at the hospital and be located on the medical campus,” Mowan said. “This new expansion strives to meet that demand, while expanding our campus footprint to be further accessible to patients and the community.”

When the project is finished, the hospital will have about 400 beds, up from 340.
