One dead after scooter, SUV collide on East Owens on Sunday morning

A 45-year-old man is dead after being ejected from his scooter in an early-morning crash with a car in the east valley, according to Metro Police.

The collision occurred just before 4 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of East Owens Avenue and North Linn Lane, a press release said. A Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on East Owens Avenue while the unregistered scooter was traveling south on North Linn Lane.

Traffic on East Owens Avenue did not have a traffic control device, while traffic on North Linn Lane has a stop sign for northbound and southbound travel.

Both drivers entered the intersection at the same time, and the front of the Jeep struck the right side of the scooter. The scooter overturned on its left side, and the scooter driver was ejected, landing in a landscaped area near the intersection. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep, 22, ran over the scooter, which became lodged beneath his car. He stopped and remained at the scene for police, Metro said in the release.

This is the 36th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
