Group to examine child welfare system, courts

A Nevada Supreme Court Justice has assembled a panel of dignitaries to examine perceived deficiencies in Clark County’s child welfare system and courts.

Justice Nancy Saitta created the committee to address issues that include the overcrowding of Child Haven, the county’s facility to temporarily house children removed from their homes; the shortage of quality foster homes; and long wait times in court for child-welfare cases.

The new panel, which includes Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager and former Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, will meet three times over the next four months to come up with recommendations for legislators and local officials.

The group’s first meeting is Oct. 7.
