Court upholds life sentence in baseball bat beating death

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has upheld a life prison sentence without parole for a Las Vegas man who pleaded guilty in the beating death of another man with a baseball bat in 2000.

Paul C. Lopez Jr. maintained that he killed Antonio Garcia because Garcia had sexually assaulted a young friend of his, according to court documents. Police alleged the motive was robbery.

The Supreme Court said Thursday that the sentencing by District Court Judge Michael Villani was based on Lopez’s past criminal history.

Lopez was accused of shooting another man and stuffing the body in a burning car, robbery and attacks on correctional officers, according to court documents.
