Letter to the editor:

Help them achieve food security

The editorial in the Sun regarding potential mass immigration from drought-stricken Central America raises legitimate alarms. We have the capacity to mitigate the resulting food shortages. Regardless of drought or the usual factor of locations with sparse resources, indigenous populations could feed themselves if given the bounty of genetically modified crops.

Even if drought conditions improve, the indigent will still be subsisting on the least desirable lands. We need to help them with the tools to achieve food security and stop wringing our hands over vane illusions of purity.
