Sheriff: 2 shot outside North Carolina courthouse

NASHVILLE, N.C. — Two people were shot outside a North Carolina courthouse Tuesday and have non-life-threatening wounds and police were searching for two suspects, authorities said.

Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins told WRAL-TV that the shooting happened Tuesday at the courthouse in Nashville, about 45 miles east of Raleigh.

Officials posted on Nash County's website that offices about a block from the courthouse were locked down in reaction to the shooting.

State Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Gordon told The Associated Press that two suspects escaped on foot and the sheriff said police are looking for a white car.

Highway Patrol troopers were setting up a perimeter around a wooded area behind the courthouse, Gordon said. A Highway Patrol helicopter also was flying over the area Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff's office did not respond to telephone calls and the Nash County manager didn't immediately return messages seeking more information.

Nashville is a town of about 5,500 in a heavily agricultural county.
