A man stabbed his wife to death and then critically injured himself this morning in a domestic dispute in their northwest valley home, Metro Police said.

The man has been identified by police as James Joyce, 52.

Police received a report about 6:30 a.m. of a family disturbance in the 8500 block of Berkley Hall Street, near West Grand Teton Drive and North Buffalo Drive, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

Two children, reportedly 16 and 10 years old, fled the house and told police their father, Joyce, had severely injured their mother, Officer Jose Hernandez said. They were not hurt, he said.

Arriving officers entered the residence, where Joyce and his wife were in a locked area. Joyce threatened officers, stating he was armed with a shotgun and would shoot anyone who entered, police said.

SWAT Officers and crisis negotiators responded to the scene. Because of the circumstances, SWAT officers entered immediately and saw Joyce's deceased wife with apparent stab wounds. Joyce was also unconscious with severe stab wounds.

He was taken to University Medical Center and underwent surgery, Meltzer said. He is listed in critical condition.

Joyce has been charged with murder with a deadly weapon.

This is the 105th homicide investigated by Metro Police this year.

Sun reporter Katie Visconti contributed to this report.
