A Nevada Department of Transportation traffic camera shows the area where the Nevada Highway Patrol reported a motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash with an SUV on U.S. 95 North near Cheyenne Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014.

A motorcyclist was in critical condition today after colliding with an off-duty Metro Police corrections officer who was driving home from work, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 5 a.m. on U.S. 95 North, just north of Cheyenne Avenue, authorities said.

The Metro officer had just gotten off his shift and was driving home in an SUV when a speeding motorcycle hit the back of the vehicle, Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The motorcyclist was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition but was expected to survive, Hixson said. The Metro officer was uninjured.

A separate, minor wreck occurred minutes later in the same area when a car was rear-ended as it slowed for the original crash, Hixson said. No one was injured.

Police closed all northbound lanes of the freeway and diverted traffic onto Cheyenne. As of 7:30 a.m., two travel lanes had been reopened and troopers said they expected to reopen additional lanes within a half hour.
