Not all first-weekend NCAA Tournament games were created equal in terms of betting action.
Johnny Avello, sports book director at Wynn Las Vegas, is confident he can already predict some of the contests gamblers will most prefer to wager on during the busiest betting weekend of the year.
“They like the tight matchups,” Avello said, “and there are a lot of them.”
In the Wynn’s opening numbers, 19 of the first 34 lined games for this year’s March Madness contain a single-digit spread. Aside from Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s glorified play-in “First Four” games, which all feature a spread of three points or less, a trio of matchups are tied for the closest lines.
On Thursday, No. 7 seed Texas lays 1.5 points against No. 10 seed Arizona State. Avello also posted No. 8 seed Memphis giving No. 9 seed George Washington 1.5 points, the same figure No. 9 seed Oklahoma State is favored by against No. 8 seed Gonzaga.
He particularly thought the latter stood out as a game that will cause a stir at betting windows between two high-profile teams. Other games Avello pinpointed that would enamor bettors included No. 7 seed Connecticut as a 4-point favorite over No. 10 seed Saint Joseph’s and No. 6 seed Ohio State giving No. 11 seed Dayton 5.5 points.
The Wynn kept up with its annual tradition of being the first book in town to post spreads for every game on Selection Sunday. Look below for a full list.
