A Henderson Police officer was wounded and a gunman killed in an early morning shootout in a residential neighborhood near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Gibson Road, authorities said.

Police responded about 4:30 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the Eagle Crest neighborhood, in the area of Horizon Ridge Parkway and Iridescent Street. When officers arrived, the suspect began shooting at them, Henderson spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said.

The suspect shot one officer before police shot and killed him, she said. The officer was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was in good condition, Richards said.

Richards said there was no evidence the shooting was connected to the ambush slaying of two Metro Police officers and the death of a bystander on Sunday at the hands of an anti-government couple who died in the incident.

Neighbors near a cul-de-sac where the shooting occurred said they were awakened in the predawn hours by a series of bangs so loud that some thought a person was knocking on their door. They later realized the noises were gunshots.

Keith Justesen, who was among those who heard the gunfire, said a police officer who interviewed him indicated the shooter was in possession of three or four weapons.
