The UNLV basketball team received five votes today in the Associated Press top 25 rankings, jumping into consideration after upsetting then third-ranked Arizona last week.
The Rebels (9-3) also had their Rating Percentage Index increase to 32nd thanks to the Arizona win. The RPI ranks teams based on their record and strength of schedule and is part of the equation for selecting teams for the NCAA Tournament.
Also today, UNLV sophomore forward Christian Wood was voted the Mountain West and CBSSports.com National Player of the Week.
Wood averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds in two games last week, scoring a career-best 24 points against Arizona, including 16 points in the second half.
Against Southern Utah, a game in which he briefly left the court in the second half because of a stomach ailment, Wood made 9 of 12 shots for 22 points and added a career-high 14 rebounds. It was the first time this season a UNLV player was honored by the league.
Arizona fell to No. 8 in the rankings. Undefeated Colorado State of the Mountain West is ranked No. 24; San Diego State received 40 votes.
Kentucky is the unanimous No. 1. Duke, Virginia, Wisconsin and Louisville round out the top 5, in order.
