After five-year hiring freeze, NLV to enlist three new police officers

The cash-strapped North Las Vegas Police Department, which hasn't hired a new officer in five years, will enlist three recruits to join its ranks on Thursday.

A Justice Department grant this year funded training for the trio. And the department announced in October that a second federal grant will bring in 13 more officers.

The city has vowed to use the October grant to hire more minorities to diversify its predominantly white police force.

The graduating recruits have been training since April. One is black, one is Asian and one is white.
