Suspect in fatal motorcycle crash on I-15 is arrested

A California man who police say caused a deadly motorcycle crash on Interstate 15 last week and fled the scene was arrested today, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Police say they arrested Maurice Richardson, 27, of Hesperia, Calif., at a gathering at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after receiving information that he would be in attendance. Richardson was arrested on charges of reckless driving, not having a valid driver's license and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

He had outstanding warrants for DUI and marijuana possession, court records show.

Police say Richardson caused the accident while driving north on Interstate 15 near Sahara Avenue in the early-morning hours of Aug. 15. Police say Richardson's motorcycle struck the motorcycle of 31-year-old Las Vegas resident Julius Gerald, causing Gerald to crash into the center median. Gerald was ejected and thrown into the travel lanes, where he was hit by a semitruck and killed. Police say Richardson fled the scene.

Richardson is being held at Clark County Detention Center.
