After 18 years working elections in Clark County, Joseph Gloria was announced as the new registrar of voters Tuesday, replacing Larry Lomax, who was appointed last week to serve on a national elections committee.

Gloria previously served as a top administrator responsible for Election Day logistics and the inventory of 12,500 pieces of voting equipment. In his new role, he’ll serve as the county’s chief election official and oversee a department that organizes and staffs 350 election polling places and 90 early voting sites during local and national elections.

County Manager Don Burnette appointed Gloria to the position, but Clark County commissioners still have to sign off at their June 18 meeting.

“Joe has been an important part of the elections team for 18 years, and I am confident Joe will do a great job as we continue to move the election process forward,” Burnette said in a statement.

Lomax, the registrar since 1999, announced his retirement earlier this year. He was chosen last week by President Barack Obama to serve on the 10-member Presidential Commission on Elections Administration, a panel designed to improve voters’ access to the polls.

“Over the last 15 years, Joe's leadership and experience have been key to our ability to successfully conduct elections,” Lomax said in a statement. “Moreover, I do not believe there is anyone in the country who knows more about the voting equipment we use than Joe. I leave here confident the department is in very good hands.”
