Nevada high court orders new hearing on dog’s fate

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court is ordering a judge in Las Vegas to hold an evidentiary hearing about whether a rescue group can take ownership of a dog that killed his owner's 1-year-old grandson in April 2012.

A court order made public Friday faults a Clark County District Court judge for not holding an evidentiary hearing to determine ownership of the120-pound mastiff-Rhodesian mix named Onion.

Henderson city officials argue the owner surrendered him to animal control officers to be euthanized.

The New York-based Lexus Project says it set up a trust and wants to send the dog to a Colorado sanctuary.

The owner later said she wanted the group to have the dog.

Judge Joanna Kishner ruled in May 2012 that the Lexus Project didn't have ownership or standing to intervene.
