51s score 11 runs in final three innings, but still lose wild affair

The Las Vegas 51s scored 11 runs in the final three innings today at Colorado Springs, but their late-inning rally fell short in a 13-12 defeat.

The 51s sent eight batters to the plate in the ninth inning, scoring three runs before Eric Campbell grounded out with the tying run on second base to end the game.

The 51s briefly tied the game at 9 with a five-run eighth inning, which included a three-run home run from Mike Baxter and a two-run single from Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

However, Colorado Springs responded with four runs in its half of the eighth for the winning runs.

Hicks had four of the 16 Las Vegas hits and also scored three runs. Ruben Tejada added a 3-for-5 performance with two runs.

The series continues Wednesday with a doubleheader. Las Vegas is still in the driver’s seat to win the Pacific Southern Division. Its magic number to clinch the league over Sacramento is four games.
