Apartment gutted by blaze

A fire at an eastside apartment complex gutted a second-floor unit this morning, but no one was injured, officials said.

Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters arrived at 6:36 a.m. to the Charleston Garden Apartments, 4830 E. Charleston Blvd., and saw heavy fire coming from an upstairs unit.

Within a few minutes, firefighters had evacuated residents and extinguished the blaze, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Residents told fire investigators that squatters had been frequenting the unit that caught fire, which was vacant, Szymanski said.

The fire was confined to the one unit, but the unit below it on the first floor sustained slight water damage, displacing three residents, he said.

Fire investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze, Szymanski said. Officials estimated damage at $35,000.
