Fires:

One injured in morning blaze in northwest valley

Garage fire

A garage fire at a northwest valley home this morning caused $100,000 worth of damage, Las Vegas fire officials said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue crews responded at 8:54 a.m. to the fire at 2312 Sun Cliffs Street, near Lake Mead Boulevard and the 215 Beltway. Several people called to report the fire.

Firefighters arrived to find the garage heavily involved in fire, but a man inside in the one-story home had escaped, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said. The man was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The blaze, which firefighters had under control in 15 minutes, gutted the garage, destroying a new car and a golf cart, Szymanski said. The rest of the home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage.

An elderly couple lives in the home along with their two dogs, Szymanski said. The husband was home when the smoke alarm activated.

The man could smell something burning but didn’t see any flames until he opened a door to the garage, where he was met by a wall of fire, Szymanski said.

Fire investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze, Szymanski said. It appears accidental.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced family.
