CARSON CITY — A request by the Department of Taxation for money to set up the collection of taxes imposed on medical marijuana has been approved by a state panel.
The Board of Examiners on Tuesday approved $529,000 for the effort. The request now goes to the Legislature's Interim Finance Committee for consideration.
Taxation Director Chris Nielsen says the funding is needed to integrate into the state's tax system medical marijuana levies on growers and dispensaries included in a bill passed by the 2013 Legislature.
Advocates of medicinal pot dispensaries say the system could raise $30 million a year once they are operational next year.
Nevada voters approved medical pot more than a decade ago, but the only legal way to get the drug has been for cardholders to grow it themselves.
