Gov. Brian Sandoval has named his former chief adviser to the top education post in Nevada.

Sandoval announced Tuesday that Dale Erquiaga would be the Superintendent of Public Instruction effective Aug. 26.

The governor says he's confident Erquiaga will continue to improve education for Nevada children, and cited Erquiaga's experience with school districts and the state Legislature.

Erquiaga served as Sandoval's senior adviser from 2010 to 2012. Prior to that, he was the executive director of government affairs at the Clark County School District, and worked as a consultant for clients including the district and the Nevada Association of School Superintendents.

He's a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, and has a master's degree from Grand Canyon University.

He fills a vacancy left when James Guthrie resigned in March.
