Medical board files complaint against Las Vegas doctor

A complaint has been filed by the state Board of Medical Examiners against a Las Vegas doctor for failing to supervise a physician’s assistant who prescribed and administered unneeded drugs and in one case threatened the safety of a patient.

The complaint says the conduct of Dr. Darby-Annette Clayton, who was licensed in 2005, constitutes medical malpractice and brings the medical profession into disrepute.

Clayton has 20 days to answer the complaint filed July 26.

Clayton was the supervising doctor at the Modern Medical and Wellness Clinic, 7190 Smoke Ranch Road, which was run by Angela Lorenzo, a physician’s assistant.

Lorenzo was accused of prescribing or administering drugs that were not needed and in one case “compromised” the safety of a patient by prescribing excessive thyroid hormone.

The complaint said Lorenzo provided “improper patient care” to five individuals and that Clayton should have intervened.

On multiple occasions, Lorenzo used and administered “expired medications on her patients,” according to the complaint filed by the investigative committee of the board.

The state Board of Pharmacy suspended the drug dispensing license of Lorenzo in August 2012.

The complaint said a doctor must “ensure strict compliance” that the physician’s assistant complies with the rules of the pharmacy board.

Clayton can ask for a hearing before the board to challenge the allegations.
