- Tropfest Las Vegas
- June 1-3, 8 p.m., free, Cosmopolitan, tropfest.com/vegas
The Australia-based film festival Tropfest is one of the world’s premier showcases for short films, having served for the last 20 years as a launching pad for filmmakers and a source of funding and resources for future projects. Each year since 1993, filmmakers submit original films created specifically for the festival, incorporating a signature item and running no more than seven minutes. The festival selections are shown in cities throughout Australia and on national TV, with an audience of more than 150,000.
Tropfest has expanded to satellite events around the world in recent years, including several in New York City, but this year marks its first stop in Las Vegas. The three-day event at the Cosmopolitan will feature a showcase of the best films from the festival’s two-decade history (including “Wilfred,” the 2002 short that inspired the TV series), with a panel of judges choosing the best of the best. There will also be a “Road to Vegas” screening featuring two-minute short films built around the theme of Las Vegas. Rob Corddry hosts Sunday’s All-Star Competition, and musical acts Allen Stone, Delta Spirit and LP perform at the festivities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
