An apartment fire Thursday afternoon that may have originated in a utility closet caused $60,000 damage, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded at 12:53 p.m. to the Coronado Bay Club apartments at 7600 S. Jones Blvd., near Robindale Road.

Witnesses told investigators they heard an explosion and saw smoke and flames pouring from a second-floor patio next to a utility closet, county spokesman Dan Kulin said.

The fire then spread to the patio roof and inside the apartment, leading to extensive smoke damage inside, Kulin said. The patio and roof sustained most of the fire damage.

The apartment’s two residents, who were home at the time, escaped safely, Kulin said. Smoke damage inside the apartment has temporarily displaced them, though.

About 35 firefighters responded to battle the fire, Kulin said. One suffered minor heat exhaustion and was treated at the scene.

Investigators have not determined the fire’s cause.
