A fire Tuesday morning at the City Center Motel on Fremont Street sent two people to the hospital, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials said.

Firefighters responded at 9:45 a.m. to a blaze in a first-floor room at the motel, 700 Fremont St., department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Two people – a motel guest and a passerby who saw smoke – tried to put out the fire before firefighters arrived, Szymanski said. The two suffered smoke inhalation and were transported to University Medical Center, he said.

The fire gutted the motel room and damaged a nearby office, Szymanski said. Guests who rented the room were not there when the fire broke out, he said.

Fire investigators are on scene, but the cause and damage estimate have not been determined yet.

Fremont Street is closed from Seventh Street to Eighth Street.
