Police cracking down on drivers who dodge Nevada registration

CARSON CITY — The state Highway Patrol will be cracking down next month on residents who register their cars in other states to avoid Nevada registration fees.

Chris Perry, director of the state Department of Public Safety, said counties and school districts lose money when vehicles are registered out of state.

Failure to register a vehicle is a misdemeanor and carries a $1,000 fine.

Those who live and work in Nevada have 30 days to register their vehicles here. The law does not apply to so-called “snowbirds,” who winter in Nevada.

In announcing the enforcement effort, the Department of Public Safety cited the cost difference between registering a car in Nevada and Oregon. In Washoe County, a $25,000 vehicle costs $350 to register for a year. In Oregon, the cost would be $195, and the registration would be good for four years.
