Metro Police found an elderly man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his home after a standoff that lasted nearly four hours on Saturday.
Police officials said the wife had fled the residence, on Furnace Gulch Avenue near Fort Apache Road, earlier in the morning and alerted Metro to the situation at around 7:30 a.m. Officials said the man was depressed and combined medication with alcohol.
Officials had been talking to the man over the telephone, but lost contact with him when he hung up and refused to answer any other calls.
No one else was in the house at the time, and there was no threat to public safety, officials said.

Well, at least in this case METRO didn't do the shooting. But I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that METRO's operation was a total failure that resulted in a sick old man's death. One can't tell from the article exactly what METRO did or didn't do. But whatever it was, it didn't work. They should study this case, critique their actions, and be prepared to handle the next similar case differently.
Why is it that I think they'll just walk away from this, and do absolutely nothing to improve their services to the community? Hum .....
Mr. Roberts,
As you state, there is not enough information in this article to say what was or was not done but it appears you found enough to Dog Metro for their actions.
I can only assume you are an expert in the field of Old Sick people and you should step up and give Metro your expertise so this does not happen again.
Operation a "failure"?...how dumb.
If someone offs themselves in a barricaded house, their operation was a failure?
I often wonder where people like this work, live, to come to these conclusions. They aren't based on thinking.
" ....you should step up and give Metro your expertise so this does not happen again."
Actually, I have. (In a prior case.) But for some odd reason I haven't heard squat back from Sheriff Gillespie.
I just KNEW some moron would come on here and STILL put blame on Metro for this death. The guy was so screwed up on meds and alcohol that his own wife fled the home. Yet because this depressed man under the influence of meds and alcohol couldn't be talked down, so it is Metro's fault? Wow!
Please explain Mr. Roberts how you think Metro should have handled this situation as law enforcement officers...not as psychologists or social workers. I really am interested in what you see as a solution.
"Actually, I have. (In a prior case.) But for some odd reason I haven't heard squat back from Sheriff Gillespie."
And your qualifications are?
