Toddler’s body recovered by divers at Lake Mead

Toddler's body found

A group of divers assigned to search for a missing toddler at Lake Mead found him dead around noon Friday, 6 feet under water near a houseboat at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor.

Randy Lavasseur, assistant chief ranger for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, said initial investigations indicated the child had drowned. The boy was almost 2 years old, Lavasseur said.

The search for the child began at 11:15 a.m., when the Inter Agency Communication received a call from the parents about their missing son, Lavasseur said. It took ground crews and divers 45 minutes to locate the child, Lavasseur said.

He said the National Park Service was conducting further investigation to verify the cause of death and whether parental negligence played a role.

If the drowning is confirmed, Lavasseur said it would be the first of the year in the area under Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s jurisdiction. The area averages about 15 drownings a year, Lavasseur said.
