Sidewalk shooting

A man was in custody after a fatal shooting Wednesday morning in the southeast Las Vegas Valley, Metro Police said.

A man in his 40s was killed when he was approached by another man and shot on a sidewalk near Windmill Parkway and La Serna Street, just east of Eastern Avenue, Capt. Tom Roberts of Metro Police’s South Central Area Command said.

Witnesses led police to a house on nearby Begonia Valley Avenue, where the suspect surrendered, police said. Roberts said police recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

Police said the suspect is 19-year-old Tyten Kaehu-Scanlan. According to Metro officials, the shooting was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute between Kaehu-Scanlan and the victim.

Neighbors said they saw a couple walking several children to the entrance of the residential neighborhood when a man ran up and shot the victim several times.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A portion of Windmill Parkway was closed in both directions near Eastern Avenue as police investigated.

Police said Kaehu-Scanlan was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and will have a hearing on Friday.
