The UNLV basketball team jumped one spot Monday in the weekly Associated Press poll to a No. 11 national ranking. In the coaches’ poll, the Rebels climbed two spots to No. 13.

UNLV (20-3, 4-1 Mountain West Conference) picked up a pair of overtime road victories last week, hanging on for a 77-72 win at Boise State and a 65-63 win against Air Force.

San Diego State, which UNLV is tied with for first place in the league, dropped in both polls after losing last Saturday at Colorado State. The Aztecs are No. 17 in both polls, falling five spots in the AP and six in the coaches’.

Kentucky is No. 1 in both polls, North Carolina is No. 5 in the AP and No. 7 in the coaches’, and Wisconsin is No. 19 in the AP in No. 20 in the coaches’. UNLV beat North Carolina in November, but lost to Wisconsin.

UNLV at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday hosts Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Rebels Saturday play at Wyoming.

  1. That's a break for San Diego st. When we were ranked #12 and lost to them on the road, at the buzzard, we dropped to #20 (7 spots) When they lose on the road to an unranked team by 17, they only fall to #17 (5 spots).

  2. San Diego State should be back into things by the time we play them at home.

We need to focus on our game against Colorado State and make damn sure we beat them.

UNLV's RPI: 7 (Up to this point in the season).

The 3 losses are all against top 50 RPI opponents as well.

  4. Wade, thanks for sharing that link.

  5. Wade, cool link.

Currently UNLV is 7 and North Carolina is 9. This is exactly why that earlier win is so important. If we beat North Carolina and their current RPI was 68; who cares. The fact that they are #9 at this juncture of the season bodes well for our placement in the Tourney if our season continues on this tack.
