Letter to the editor:

Occupy groups are unduly ignored

Lately, I have noticed that the mainstream media have been entirely too careful not to mention anything about the Occupy Wall Street movement. The MSM seem to dedicate their headlines to tragedy, celebrity cat fights, and “terrorist” acts instead of focusing on what can be called American history in the making. The peaceful gathering of the working-class masses to hold the corporate establishment of robbing the poor and giving to the wealthy accountable for their misdeeds is quite a feat in the 21st century.

I say it should be followed and supported. The Sin City (Las Vegas) chapter of the Occupy movement is one of the most remarkable encampments due to its multifaceted mission: It’s not just about the marches and the protests. It’s also about reaching out to the community to help the homeless, the sick and occasionally accommodating random visitors from other Occupy movements.

I stop by there once a week to drop off food and reading material for this group, and each time I visit, the encampment is clean, well-maintained and quiet. They do have a lease on the property they are occupying, which is smart thinking on the facilitator’s part. If anyone does decide to drop by and talk to these wonderful folks, be sure to read the message on the front gate, scrawled on a sheet, on Paradise Road; “This is a drug-free facility.”
