Henderson to decide whether to expand recycling program

A new survey shows 92 percent of those in Henderson’s pilot recycling program are happy with weekly recycling pickup, while 84 percent are OK with weekly garbage pickup.

A third of the 600 participants questioned by UNLV’s Cannon Survey Center — 33 percent — said they noticed an increased odor as a result of the once- instead of twice-weekly trash pickup. But 86 percent said it wouldn’t stop them from participating in the program.

After receiving a recommendation from the Citizens Advisory Committee, the City Council will decide next month whether to continue the limited pilot program, end it, or expand it citywide, which could take several years.

Some 25,000 people in the program, implemented by waste-collection company Republic Services, have separate trash and recycling bins that are each picked up once a week.

The program started in the fall of 2010 to encourage recycling.

City spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said although many people were leery of about the possibility of increased odor and of separating their recyclables, the program has had an impact.

“In the year people have been on the program, it has increased recycling from 6 percent to more than 30 percent,” Richards said.

But some residents are still not impressed.

Henderson resident Rana Goodman said the program is not practical for seniors who cannot haul containers back and forth.

“I tried wheeling one today that was empty, and I’m quite able-bodied and I’m fairly strong, and I had a hard time,” Goodman said.

The city and Republic Services are holding open-house meetings from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Sun City Anthem community center ballroom.
