Construction project — possibly for a mosque — damaged by fire

Fire at construction site

A mysterious fire that erupted overnight at what appeared to be the construction site for a mosque may trigger an investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The 1 a.m. fire in the 2500 block of Lamb Boulevard, near Carey Avenue in the northeast valley, brought a two-alarm response from the Clark County Fire Department. Investigators weren't able to immediately identify a cause, and the damage was widespread, said county spokeswoman Stacey Welling.

The fire caused considerable damage to the construction site, Welling said. Fire investigators have not, however, released a damage estimate.

Fire officials notified the ATF, a standard procedure when a fire occurs at a potential house of worship, Welling said. County officials were trying to get in touch with the site developers Wednesday morning, she said.

It was not immediately clear how far the construction project had progressed.

Firefighters were not injured while battling the blaze at the vacant site, she said. Fire investigators have not released a damage estimate.
