Go bald (or give some green) to fight childhood cancers at Ri Ra

St. Baldrick's

He’s creepy, but he’s also a hero.

Were it not for his baldness and the bold words, “undifferentiated sarcoma” next to his portrait, Teddy Gerber could be any handsome 9-year-old. His face is one of five on the homepage of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity that funds research into cures for childhood cancers. Sadly, Teddy succumbed to his disease in 2010, but it’s not too late to help other young people fighting for their lives and better treatment options for everyone.

Starting at noon on March 3, the cause will be celebrated and supported locally at Rí Rá Las Vegas, which is hosting a St. Baldrick’s head-shaving fundraiser. As a symbol of solidarity with those going through chemotherapy, registered “shavees” will surrender their hair to volunteer stylists. But before the big day, they’re hoping to garner pledges from those who may not be up for going bald but want to contribute. So far, individuals and teams have raised almost $2,000 toward the goal of $25,000, and you can pledge or register here.

Haircuts are not the only thing happening during the fundraiser. The Wild Colonial Bhoys will be playing their signature Celtic rock, and there will be drink specials for all, with extra kickbacks for those going bald. If you can’t make the event, do your part and Tweet it: Support @BaldVegas and go bald to fight childhood cancer at @RiRaVegas March 3 #BaldVegas bit.ly/wG7TgN.
